Design to me enhances communication. It helps more people understand a given message. It helps accelerate learning and attempts to find the optimum or "best" solution and bring it into use. Being a designer, I know I must move groups of people .. it could be to attend an event, follow a sign, understand a map, learn a scientific principle, or buy a product. Having Illustration as my strongest feature, I like to think that I have both the artist and the designer in me to achieve visual communication while satisfying my self and a mass audience!
