BBC Janala, is a ground breaking multi-platform project to provide English language learning to millions of people in Bangladesh. Janala was a BBC World Service Trust (WST) programme funded by DIFID, aimed at Bangladeshis earning under ?2 a day. Bangladesh has challenging conditions for learning: - High demand for English - Geographically isolated country with poor infrastructure - However, the country has 99% mobile network coverage From our initial research we found that a significant majority of people in Bangladesh (government and general public) understands the economic importance of learning English. 84% of Bangladeshis said learning English was a top priority for their future, with 99% wanting their children to learn English.
